poem: Believe

The other week two other local poets and I had a chance to do some poetry for a well-known high street company and perform it at their VIP product launch party. We were given a list of words relating to the product range, and picked three topics for our poems. One of mine was “Believe” – and it’s something I wanted to write anyway, so I’m posting it here out of context on my personal blog.

I’m basically an agnostic pagan, so other people’s right to believe or disbelieve what they like is important to me. My choice is not to choose (much). I keep an open mind. But as long as people aren’t harming anyone else, then I see little point in arguing over what resonates with each person. My friends all have very different views and I respect them, because the one thing they have in common is a good heart.

Believe

My friend bought her necklace in a shop by the sea
A pewter pentagram on a fabric cord.
She says she wears it for protection,
And I can’t argue, because she believes.

My friend likes hanging out with the Jesus Army.
She’s been baptised and reborn.
Before, she felt aimless, now she has a Saviour.
And I can’t argue, because she believes.

My friend sends healing to those in need,
And speaks to spirits, reads tarot cards.
She gives advice from the afterlife
And I can’t argue, because she believes.

My friend prefers to trust what she sees
And finds the answers in scientific laws
She doesn’t need dogma or any god
And I can’t argue when she disbelieves.

As for me, I continue to seek:
The truth is scattered, so what’s the harm
In leaving me to uncertainty?
I’m constantly questioning what I believe.
